Wilberforce University

Wilberforce University, established in 1856 by the African Methodist Episcopal Church, is the oldest private African-American university in the United States. Created as an “intellectual Mecca and refuge from slavery,” Wilberforce University served as a destination point of the Ohio Underground Railroad.

The university’s original program offerings–teacher education, theology, and industrial trades–have since expanded to include a comprehensive selection of liberal arts, science and engineering, and business degree programs. A liberal arts college at heart, Wilberforce University also offers applied career development programs in areas like organizational management, healthcare administration, and information technology. The university’s emphasis on providing an applied, relevant college education drives its distinctive “cooperative education” program, in which students are required to pursue internships alongside their academic courses.
