Overview
Virginia State University carries the distinction of being the first state-supported four-year institution in the United States for African-Americans. Founded in 1882, VSU established its academic reputation under the guidance of John Mercer Langston, a strong advocate for black education and Virginia’s first African-American representative to be elected to Congress. Since then, VSU has graduated an impressive roster of African-American business leaders, artists, and public servants. Among its alumni, VSU counts the first African-American to serve on the New Jersey Supreme Court, a president of the National Education Association, Chairman and CEO of Consolidated Bank and Trust, jazz musician Billy Taylor, and a number of high-ranking military leaders.
