Coppin State University, founded in 1900, is a historically black college in Baltimore, Maryland. The first classes trained black elementary school teachers. By 1926, Coppin was a two-year teachers’ school named for Fanny Jackson Coppin, a slave born in Washington, DC, who graduated from Oberlin College in Ohio and was a pioneer in teacher education. In 1988, the institution became part of the Maryland state university system.
Coppin State University is serious about outreach to the citizens of the central Baltimore metropolitan area. In 1998, this historically black college took over nearby Rosemont Elementary School and was immediately successful in raising the reading level their first-graders. The university also operates a community medical clinic and offers training to churches and community groups. Coppin State University students can earn undergraduate and graduate degrees from the schools of Nursing, Arts and Sciences, and Professional Studies.
