Claflin University, in Orangeburg, South Carolina, about 50 miles southeast of Columbia, is a historically black college affiliated with the United Methodist Church. The school was founded in 1869 and is named for Massachusetts Governor William Claflin and his philanthropist father, Lee Claflin, who purchased the campus for the school. The original 1869 charter forbade discrimination of any kind, making it the first college in the state to welcome all students, regardless of gender.
At this coeducational, historically black college, students can earn undergraduate and graduate degrees and acquire a strong educational foundation in business, education, the humanities and social sciences, and the natural sciences and mathematics. Claflin University’s recent academic enhancements include the Claflin Honors College and the Center for Excellence in Science and Mathematics. U.S. News & World Report has ranked Claflin University high on its lists of top colleges.
